Mikel, Owalo Launch Youth Football Initiative to Boost Kenya’s Sporting Future

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has partnered with Eliud Owalo to launch a transformative youth football initiative in Kenya.

Unveiled in Nairobi on May 5, 2025, the program aims to scout, train, and mentor young football talent across the country, with a focus on underprivileged communities.

Owalo, the Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of the President, said the initiative—driven by the Eliud Owalo Foundation—seeks to create a robust talent development system.

“John Obi Mikel’s journey from a small Nigerian town to international stardom is the kind of story we want to replicate for Kenyan youth,” Owalo remarked.

Mikel, who won the UEFA Champions League and multiple English Premier League titles with Chelsea, brings invaluable experience to the initiative.

He emphasized Kenya’s vast potential, stating, “With the right structures and support, these kids can compete at the highest level.”

The project will include football clinics, talent identification camps, and mentorship programs.

Plans are also underway to secure long-term financial backing through corporate sponsorships for struggling local clubs like Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

The initiative has ignited hope among Kenyan football fans, many of whom believe it could mark a turning point for the country’s football fortunes.

With improved infrastructure and world-class guidance, the dream is to produce Kenyan players capable of starring in global leagues.

The Owalo-Mikel partnership signals a renewed commitment to developing sports at the grassroots, offering young Kenyans a path to success through football.
