Family In Crime: Man, Wife And Daughters Convicted Of Land Fraud

A family of four, a couple and their two daughters, as well as two businessmen, were convicted.

Three businessmen and five of their family members were convicted today of defrauding a businessman of $90 million by falsely claiming to be in the position to sell him 100 acres of land in Kajiado.

A family of four, a couple and their two daughters, as well as two businessmen, were convicted.

Mombasa chief magistrate Martha Mutuku convicted the six accused today in a Nairobi Milimani Court of obtaining a total of 90 million from George Gacheru Mungai, who was trading thorn hill holdings limited between March 9th and April 11th, 2011.

The accused persons, according to the chief magistrate, sold a previously sold land to the businessman and then used forged documents to obtain land registration.

The accused, Fredrick Kinyajui Kiruthi, Ngai Njeru, Irene Wangui Waweru, Charity Mumbu Njue, Gerald Maina Gachau, Annah Wambui Waweru, Reginah Njeri Kinyajui, and Joyce Wambui Waweru, will spend the weekend in custody before appearing in court on Tuesday to mitigate their sentences.

The money is said to have been obtained by Fredrick Kinyajui and Irene Wangui from a businessman, while the rest obtained property through the proceeds of crime.

Irene benefited her two daughters as well as her husband. She bought them a Toyota Harrier, land in Ruiru, land in Nairobi, and a lorry, which she registered in the names of her two daughters.

This was a case in which Lawyer Charles Mugane fought a difficult battle that allowed the victims to find justice. The Magistrate was praised by the lawyer for delivering justice to the victims.

“We’ve been in and out of Court since 2011…it hasn’t been an easy journey,” the lawyer explained.
