The Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) led by prosecutors Peris Maina and Dela Wilbey is set to present a total of 17 witnesses in a murder case touching five police officers.
The five police officers who were charged at Milimani High Court are alleged to have murdered a suspect who was in lawful police custody at Changamwe Police Station in Mombasa County in 2018.
The 5 police officers are; Khalif Abdulahi Sagat, James Muli Koti, Joseph Odhiambo Sirawa, Edward Kongo Onchonga and Nelson Nkanae.
They are charged with the murder of Caleb Esipino Otieno alias Wiango in 2018.
The murdered suspect was booked at the police station on September 18, 2018 at around 1945hours.
According to report, he was temporarily removed from cells at around 2245hours the same night to be taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead undergoing treatment.
The case is set for pretrial on October 13, 2022.
The 5 police officers were denied bond on arraignment to court in 2018 after the prosecution vehemently objected their release citing possible interference with crucial witnesses.
The case represents a small fraction of extrajudicial cases where police officers are accused of unlawful murder of suspects as well as forced disappearance of suspects whose whereabouts have remained a mystery over the years.
