Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo has urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to launch a swift and thorough investigation into the controversial death of a fisherman who allegedly died by suicide while in police custody at Kipasi police post.
The deceased, identified as Calvin Omondi Onditi from Ndhiwa Constituency, was arrested on the night of Saturday, June 15, after he was reportedly found naked in a goat pen in Ndhuru village under allegations of bestiality. He was detained at the Kipasi police post, where he was later discovered hanging from the roof of the holding cell just hours after his arrest.
Odhiambo expressed deep concern over the incident, citing the increasing number of alleged suicides in police custody. “The frequency of such deaths raises serious questions that must be addressed with the urgency and seriousness they deserve,” she said.
Calling for transparency and accountability, the MP urged IPOA to conduct a detailed probe and produce a conclusive report to determine the circumstances surrounding Omondi’s death. “We must get to the bottom of this case. The truth must be known, and justice must be served,” Odhiambo stated.
She also appealed for calm among local residents, encouraging them to remain patient and allow authorities ample time to complete their investigations. Additionally, she called on the community to cooperate with investigators and await the results of a postmortem examination expected from the hospital.
This latest incident adds to growing public concern over the safety of individuals held in police custody across the country. IPOA has yet to issue a public statement on the matter.
