A violent mob stormed Chemase Police Post in Nandi County on Thursday night, demanding the release of a murder suspect, Victor Kimtai, who was accused of beheading a man in Chebusias and threatening his family.

The mob’s actions escalated into a full-scale attack, leaving destruction and loss of life in its wake.

Kimtai, 30, was arrested earlier after a search led to the recovery of the victim’s head from a well.

While awaiting transfer to Potopoto Police Station, an irate crowd besieged the post, hurling stones and setting a police vehicle ablaze.

The mob lowered and burned the national flag, further intensifying the chaos.

The crowd forcibly removed Kimtai from custody, stoned him to death, and set his body on fire before dispersing.

In the melee, three officers sustained injuries, and the station’s equipment, including files, a radio transceiver, and a printer, was stolen or destroyed.

Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango condemned the incident, urging the public to avoid mob justice.

“Destruction of police property only hampers our ability to serve the public effectively,” she said.

This incident highlights a troubling rise in attacks on police facilities, echoing similar events in Mathioya last year.

Authorities are calling for calm and collaboration to ensure justice prevails.
