Moi University Student’s Lawyers Chip In for Fare After Court Appearance

A Moi University student charged with publishing false information about President William Ruto received an unexpected show of goodwill from his lawyers, who offered to contribute to his bus fare after his court session on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.

David Oaga Mokaya, a communications student, appeared before a Nairobi court accompanied by his legal team led by Danstan Omari and Ian Mutiso, who represented him on behalf of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

Mokaya faces charges under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act for allegedly posting an image implying President Ruto’s death, a claim prosecutors say was meant to cause public alarm.

During the brief proceedings, the court ordered that the case be mentioned virtually on November 18 to prevent disruption of Mokaya’s academic schedule and reduce his transport costs between Eldoret and Nairobi.

After the session, in a moment that briefly lightened the mood, lawyer Danstan Omari offered to contribute to Mokaya’s fare back to school. Members of the LSK legal team joined in the gesture, prompting laughter across the courtroom.

The exchange stood out in an otherwise serious proceeding, highlighting the financial strain faced by students caught up in prolonged legal battles. Mokaya, who has denied the charges, thanked his legal team before heading back to campus.

The case will now proceed virtually later this month as the court reviews submissions from both sides.
