Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced that Mombasa, Bomet, and Nyeri counties are leading in the nationwide registration drive under the newly established Social Health Authority (SHA). Speaking during a visit to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), Duale revealed that Mombasa tops the list with a 58.9% registration rate, followed by Bomet at 51.7% and Nyeri at 50.6%.

Other counties performing well include Elgeyo Marakwet (48.4%), Kirinyaga (48.2%), Kisumu (44.8%), Lamu (44.3%), Kericho (43.7%), Embu (43%), and Tharaka Nithi (42.1%).

To date, over 22.3 million Kenyans have registered on the SHA platform, with nearly 4.9 million undergoing means testing to determine their tailored health benefit packages. The CS noted that daily registration averages between 45,000 and 50,000, with a record 52,893 new sign-ups and Ksh 20.9 million in contributions recorded within a single day.

“The overwhelming response to Taifa Care reflects growing public trust in this reform. Kenyans are not only registering—they’re actively contributing. This shows their confidence in the system,” said Duale, urging those yet to register to do so promptly.

During the visit, Duale also praised KUTRRH for conducting its first successful kidney transplant, calling it a milestone for the institution and the country’s healthcare system. However, he cautioned that with the expansion of transplant services, Kenya must bolster regulatory safeguards to prevent exploitation and malpractice.

“The Ministry is reviewing existing laws and policies to ensure organ donation and transplants are ethical, transparent, and protected from abuse,” he affirmed.
