Mombasa voters are preparing for the postponed gubernatorial election scheduled for Monday, September 29, 2022.
Swalha Ibrahim, the Mombasa County IEBC Elections Manager, stated that the county is prepared for the election, which has attracted six gubernatorial candidates.
Ms. Ibrahim, who is also the County Returning Officer, believes the IEBC will conduct a smooth governorship election.
“In terms of the IEBC, we are ready to go on August 29,” she said, adding that the commission was ready to deliver a free, fair, and credible election.
She urged voters to turn out in large numbers and vote because every effort has been made to ensure peaceful elections.
The Electoral Commission has approved eight candidates to run for Governor, succeeding Hassan Joho, who served two terms as stipulated in the 2010 constitution.
The government declared Monday, August 29 a national holiday in areas where voting will be carried out.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) suspended the governorship election in Mombasa and Kakamega counties on August 8, 2022, a day before the general election, due to a ballot paper mix-up.
Parliamentary elections are also scheduled in Kitui Rural, Kacheliba, and Pokot South constituencies in West Pokot County, as well as Rongai Constituency in Nakuru County.
Voting for MCAs had also been suspended in Nyaki West ward (North Imenti Constituency in Meru County) and Kwa Njenga (Embakasi South in Nairobi County).
