A 25-year-old man, Alwi Mohamed Sharif, was on Monday, 27, October 2025, arraigned before the Shanzu Law Courts in Mombasa County, where he faced three terrorism related charges, including membership in a terrorist group and aiding recruitment into Al-Shabaab.
According to the charge sheet, Sharif is accused of being a member of the Al-Shabaab terrorist organization on June 25, 2025, at Mombasa Township within Mombasa County. He denied the charge.
In the second count, the prosecution alleges that on the same day at around 9:11 p.m, the accused provided Ksh6,922 to a man identified as Akhmad Akmed Ali, knowing or having reason to believe the funds would facilitate his travel from Lamu to Somalia via Moyale to join Al-Shabaab.
The third count accuses Sharif of recruiting members into a terrorist group by sending money to assist the same individual in traveling to Somalia to join Al-Shabaab.
Sharif pleaded not guilty to all the charges when presented before the court.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) opposed his release on bond, citing the gravity of the offences and potential security risks.
The matter will be mentioned on November 10, 2025, for further directions.
