Mombasa Port workers and Truck drivers stage demonstrate over SGR Cargo take over

emonstrators on Monday protesting over low business linked to SGR Cargo transport

Workers and haulers working in Mombasa Port have cried foul over the recent directive issued by the government directing all cargo headed to Nairobi, be shipped through the Standard Gauge Railways.

The protesters who took to Mombasa Road to protest, complained of the loss of jobs, closure of businesses and general economic breakdown.

‘Ever since the directive to transport cargo through the SGR was issued, many staff working at the port have been laid off, this will eventually lead to an increase in crime in Mombasa. So the government must withdraw this directive to avert the crisis’ said one of the Protesters.

Mvita MP Abdulswamud Shariff Nassir who addressed the demonstrators said Mombasa residents had a right to demonstrate on anything infringing on their rights.

“I am supporting Mombasa residents to demonstrate against the decision by KPA and KRA to order for 100 percent of transportation of containers from the port of Mombasa to Inland Container Depot in Nairobi,” said Nassir
