Chama Cha Kazi party leader Moses Kuria has conceded defeat in the Kiambu gubernatorial race.
In a statement on Facebook Tuesday night, Kuria said he is heading back to the private sector after eight years of service as MP.
“I enjoyed every minute of my 8 years in elective politics. Back to the private sector. Happily,” Kuria said.
His statement came before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) released the final results for any seat.
Kuria faced Senator Kimani Wamatangi of the United Democratic Alliance, former Governor William Kabogo of the Tujibebe Party, and Independent candidate Patrick ‘WaJungle’ Wainaina.
Other candidates include independent Juliet Kimemia, Safina’s Mwende Gatabaki, and incumbent Jubilee party governor James Nyoro.
The Gatundu MP was the second politician to concede defeat Tuesday night after long-serving Taveta legislator Naomi Shaban failed to secure a fifth term.
Naomi is one of the Coast region’s longest-serving legislators, having entered politics in 2002. She has been an MP for 20 years, having succeeded former MP Basil Criticos.
“Good people, there is time for everything. Well done team Bwire,” the Jubilee Deputy Party Leader said.
“Thank you for giving me a chance to serve you for 20 years. My young brother Okano, I congratulate you,” she added.
Five candidates vied for the seat: Shaban, Okano, Moris Mutiso of the ODM, Gaudenzio Muutu (Independent), and former youth president Didas Mzirai.
Although official results have not yet been released, preliminary polling station results show Okano leading the race.
