In a bold declaration that has sent ripples through the political landscape, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has stated that he is the best-suited candidate from the Western region to succeed President William Ruto.

Speaking in Kikwameti Village, Trans Nzoia, during the funeral of former Sikhendu MCA Eric Musumba, Wetangula, who also leads the Ford Kenya party, asserted that his position as the third in command within the Kenya Kwanza administration gives him a clear advantage over other potential candidates from the region. Wetangula, a seasoned political figure, emphasized that he believes President Ruto will secure a second term, after which he will pave the way for him to ascend to the country’s highest office.

“I am the senior-most leader from the Western region, and the position I hold in the government as the third in command puts me in a better position to succeed President Ruto,” Wetangula said.

As part of his strategy to bolster his presidential aspirations, Wetangula revealed plans to focus on empowering the youth in the Western region. He highlighted an initiative to ensure that all students who have reached the age of 18 are issued with national identification cards, an important step in fostering civic participation and political engagement.

“I am not interested in the governor’s seat. It is a small position. My level now is senior, and I am eyeing the presidency,” Wetangula declared, as he dismissed any attempts to undermine his ambitions. “So stop fighting me.”

Wetangula, who has been a prominent figure in Kenyan politics for decades, further emphasized the need for unity in the Western region. He believes that political fragmentation in the area has hindered its economic and political progress, and that only through concerted efforts can the region overcome its challenges.

“We must come together as a region and build a strong foundation for our future. Unity is the key to solving both the economic and political issues we face,” he said.

While Wetangula’s statement on his presidential ambitions is likely to stir debate, it underscores the ongoing power struggles within the political elite. His rise to the position of National Assembly Speaker is viewed by many as a testament to his political acumen and influence. However, it remains to be seen whether the people of Western Kenya, and indeed the rest of the country, will rally behind his bid for the presidency in 2027.
