Mother and Children Hospitalised After Hit-and-Run Accident in Makueni

A woman and her children are currently receiving medical treatment at Matuu Level Four Hospital following a hit-and-run accident that occurred on Friday at Kikumini Market along the busy Kanyonyo–Embu Road in Makueni County.

According to authorities, the family was struck by a double-cabin vehicle while walking near the roadside market area. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to assist the victims but instead sped off from the scene, sparking a swift response from local law enforcement.

Masinga Central Administrator John Malonza confirmed the details of the incident, stating that the vehicle was later intercepted at Kivaa Market, several kilometers from the site of the accident.

“The suspect fled the scene immediately after the accident, but we were able to trace and intercept the vehicle at Kivaa Market thanks to timely tip-offs from members of the public,” said Malonza. “The vehicle has since been impounded and taken to Kikumini Police Station for further examination as investigations continue.”

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and rushed the injured mother and her children to Matuu Level Four Hospital. Medical staff at the facility reported that the victims sustained varying degrees of injuries but are currently in stable condition and under close observation.

Residents of Kikumini have since expressed concern over the increasing number of reckless driving incidents along the Kanyonyo–Embu Road, which they say has become a hotspot for traffic accidents due to speeding and lack of pedestrian infrastructure.

“We are urging the government to install speed bumps and enforce stricter traffic regulations in this area,” said one local trader. “Our children and families are not safe when walking along this road.”

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the driver, but police investigations are ongoing. Law enforcement officials have assured the public that the perpetrator will be held accountable and face the full force of the law.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in rural and peri-urban areas.
