Mother and Infant Killed in Grisly Kibwezi–Kitui Road Accident

A tragic road accident near Makele Shopping Centre in Ikanga/Kyatune Ward has left three people dead in yet another deadly incident on the notorious Kibwezi–Kitui highway.

The crash occurred when a Toyota Prado en route from Kitui suffered a sudden tire burst, causing the driver to lose control.

The vehicle, carrying four adults and an infant, veered off the road and rolled several times before coming to a halt.

A woman and an infant died instantly, while another victim succumbed to injuries shortly after the crash. The remaining survivors were rushed to Kitui County Referral Hospital in critical condition.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as harrowing, with twisted metal and cries for help marking the tragic aftermath. This incident is part of a worrying trend of frequent accidents on the Kibwezi–Kitui road, a highway often blamed for its winding stretches, inadequate signage, and high-speed traffic.

According to local traffic records, over 30 serious accidents have been reported along this highway in the past year alone, claiming more than 50 lives and injuring scores of others.

Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua, who visited the scene, expressed his condolences and demanded urgent road safety interventions. “Reckless driving and poor road conditions are a deadly mix. We must act now,” he said.

Authorities have launched investigations, as pressure mounts on transport agencies to audit and improve safety measures along the perilous stretch.
