Motorists Raise Alarm Over Dangerous Boda Boda Riding

By Michelle Ndaga

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) has issued a warning about the rising recklessness of boda boda riders, citing unsafe riding practices that endanger both drivers and pedestrians across Nairobi and other urban areas.

In a statement, the association highlighted several dangerous behaviors, including riding against traffic, swerving unpredictably at intersections, blinding motorists with bright lights, carrying passengers without reflective clothing at night, and ignoring traffic rules on highways and footpaths.

MAK expressed concern that such activities often occur in full view of police officers, yet enforcement appears lax, putting road users at risk of accidents and confrontations.

The association further noted that some riders reportedly harass motorists, demand compensation on the spot, and, in extreme cases, resort to theft or destruction of vehicles following minor collisions.

The association is calling on boda boda unions and authorities to take responsibility and implement measures to ensure riders follow traffic regulations. It emphasized the need for cooperation between riders, motorists, and law enforcement to protect lives and restore order on Kenya’s roads.
