Mason Mount came off the bench to score twice as Manchester United came from behind to thrash Athletic Bilbao 4-1 (7-1 on aggregate) and secure their place in the Europa League final.
Trailing 1-0 at half-time after Mikel Jauregizar’s stunning strike gave Bilbao brief hope at Old Trafford, United roared back in the second half with goals from Mount, Casemiro, and Rasmus Hojlund to book a showdown with Premier League rivals Tottenham on May 21.
Athletic had threatened early, with Alex Berenguer going close before Jauregizar fired home a spectacular 25-yard curler following a defensive lapse by Harry Maguire.
It took until the 72nd minute for United to respond, but Mount made an instant impact with a precise finish into the bottom corner.
Casemiro nodded home Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick five minutes later to turn the tie on its head, before Hojlund tapped in Amad Diallo’s cut-back.
Deep into stoppage time, Mount added his second with a delightful long-range lob over a stranded Julen Agirrezabala.
The comeback highlighted United’s depth, with substitutes playing key roles once again — they now have seven goals from the bench in this Europa League campaign.
Mount’s first goals since returning from injury also offered a timely boost for Erik ten Hag’s side, who now look ahead to a blockbuster final in Bilbao.
Despite missing key attackers, Athletic pushed hard but ultimately could not overturn the first-leg deficit.
