Mount Kenya Warned Against Ditching Ruto Ahead of 2027 Polls

A section of Kenya Kwanza leaders has warned Mount Kenya voters against backing a new presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, insisting that such a move would push the region into the political cold for the next 15 years.

Speaking at an empowerment forum held at Wamagana Stadium in Tetu Constituency, Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, National Assembly Chief Whip Silvanus Osoro, Senators Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho) and Wahome Wamatinga (Nyeri) rallied the region to stay loyal to President William Ruto, framing him as the only path to eventual Mount Kenya leadership at the national level.

“As a region, we are better off with William Ruto. He has five years to go, after which he can pave way for one of our own,” said Kiunjuri. “Voting for someone else now means 15 more years of waiting.”

He singled out Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as a potential presidential contender from the region, saying the DP is already making national inroads and building alliances.

Osoro echoed the remarks, describing Ruto as a friend of Mount Kenya who understands its unique development needs.

“Those proposing alternatives from the opposition don’t know your problems. Stick with Ruto — he’s investing in this region.”

Kericho’s Cheruiyot cautioned the community against what he termed “political basket syndrome,” where votes are influenced by ethnic brokers.

“Don’t allow yourselves to be put in one tribal basket. Aligning with Ruto is national prosperity.”

Meanwhile, Senator Wamatinga defended the empowerment forums, saying they are in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda and not mere political sideshows.

“Replacing old pipes, supporting youth and women groups — this is development, not politics,” he declared.
