MP Gitonga Mukunji Urges Calm After Ethnic Clash at Siakago Market

Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has appealed for peace and tolerance following an ethnic confrontation between Embu and Meru traders at Siakago Market, which was reportedly triggered by growing insecurity in the area.

Addressing a public rally at Ishiara Market in support of Mbeere North DCP Party parliamentary candidate Duncan Mbui, Mukunji blamed the unrest on alleged laxity by local police officers.

He urged members of both communities, particularly those involved in the miraa trade, to uphold peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

“The security of our people must come first. If the officers on the ground are unable to protect lives and property, they must be replaced,” Mukunji said.

To curb further tensions, the legislator called for the immediate transfer of the area’s Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), Officer Commanding Station (OCS), and other security personnel, accusing them of failing to contain the escalating insecurity.

The clash has heightened concerns over inter-community relations in the region, with leaders now pushing for stronger policing and dialogue to prevent further violence.
