Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Daraja Nabwera has filed a defamation suit at the Milimani Commercial Court, seeking Ksh60 million in damages from three bloggers accused of linking him to the mysterious death of Munyuki High School Principal, Simon Isiaho Shange.
Through lawyer Danstan Omari, Nabwera is demanding Ksh20 million in compensation from each of the defendants; Peter Amunga, George Opunga Tamata and Simon Asievela over what he terms as a calculated smear campaign meant to destroy his image and reputation.
According to court documents, the three allegedly published false and malicious statements on social media platforms including Kakamega Post, Malava Online and Lugari Watchdog, between October 3 and 8, 2025. The posts allegedly identified him by name and title, using references such as “MP Nabwera” and “MP for Lugari,” accusing him of being involved in the principal’s death.
“The statements were false, malicious and intended to portray me as a criminal. They have caused immense harm to my reputation and leadership standing,” Nabwera stated in his affidavit.
The legislator further wants the court to issue restraining orders barring the bloggers, their associates and any other individuals from publishing or sharing further defamatory content against him. The MP cites violations under Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, which criminalizes the deliberate spread of false information meant to discredit a person.
Nabwera’s lawyer told the court that the case has been filed under a certificate of urgency due to the extent of reputational damage caused by the viral posts. He also disclosed that demand letters had earlier been sent to the bloggers requiring them to delete the content and issue public apologies within 12 hours, but none complied.
The defamation suit comes amid rising public attention over the tragic death of Principal Simon Isiaho Shange, whose body was discovered on November 8, 2025, in River Kipkaren, days after a road accident along the Eldoret–Malaba highway. His disappearance and subsequent death have sparked outrage in Lugari, with police investigating whether foul play was involved.
Community leaders have urged calm as investigations continue. Local education officials, including KNUT Kakamega East Branch Secretary Patrick Chungani, condemned the growing harassment of teachers and demanded stronger protection for educators, saying: “Teachers are not punching bags — we demand justice and respect for their dignity.”
The case will be mentioned on November 12, 2025, before the Chief Magistrate at the Milimani Commercial Court.
