Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo has issued a stern warning to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, threatening to introduce a motion in Parliament to permanently bar him from holding public office due to his continued use of divisive rhetoric.
Speaking during a funds drive in Rongo on Sunday, Otiende accused Gachagua of failing to reform after his impeachment by the Senate in 2024. He cited Article 75 of the Kenyan Constitution, which outlines the conduct of state officers and provides for disqualification from holding future public office under certain circumstances.
“Every day you speak, we realize you never learnt your lesson,” said Otiende. “We impeached you under Article 75, but we didn’t go far enough. If you continue with this divisive language, we will initiate a special motion under Article 75(3) to bar you from ever contesting for public office again.”
The vocal legislator’s remarks come amid growing criticism of Gachagua’s recent political activities. The former deputy president has launched a sustained campaign targeting President William Ruto and the current administration, drawing accusations of promoting ethnic divisions.
Gachagua’s rhetoric has drawn ire from leaders across the political divide, including those allied with Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition and the newly-formed broad-based government, who accuse him of stoking tribal sentiments.
Otiende’s threat marks an escalation in the political feud, with constitutional consequences potentially looming for Gachagua should Parliament move forward with the proposed motion.
Under Article 75(3), a person removed from office for violating Chapter Six of the Constitution, which governs leadership and integrity, may be disqualified from holding any other public office for life, subject to parliamentary procedure and approval.
While Gachagua has yet to respond directly to Otiende’s warning, political observers say the move signals increasing efforts to curtail his influence as he repositions himself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
