MP Peter Salasya’s Detention Extended Amid Claims of Political Persecution

Mumias East MP and 2027 presidential hopeful Peter Salasya will remain in police custody following a delay in court proceedings attributed to an error in the charge sheet.

Salasya, arrested last Friday, has now spent three nights at Central Police Station in Nairobi, with no clear indication of when his case will be heard.

His arraignment at Milimani Law Courts was postponed after the presiding magistrate flagged inconsistencies in the judge’s sheet.

The case has since been moved to a different courtroom, leaving his legal team and supporters frustrated.

”Hon. Peter Salasya was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts. His legal team waited outside Court 6 all morning, but the magistrate announced an error in the judge’s sheet. The case has now been moved to Court 2, and we have to wait. Seems someone is managing this matter,” the aide confirmed.

Salasya’s arrest followed allegations of incitement during public rallies. He claims he was ambushed by masked men wielding AK-47 rifles along the Isiolo-Nanyuki road after addressing a crowd.

The MP alleged the attackers, whom he identified as DCI officers, disarmed his bodyguards and tried to arrest him.

Efforts to secure bail have so far failed, with police reportedly citing “orders from above”—fueling fears of political interference.

”Salasya remains detained at Central Police Station. His lawyers’ efforts to secure cash bail have been unsuccessful, with police citing “orders from above” to keep him in custody,” his aide confirmed.

A week before his arrest, Salasya narrowly escaped a similar incident in Mombasa, where plainclothes men attempted to seize him without identification or a marked vehicle.

Despite the pressure, Salasya insists his campaign is peaceful and aimed at empowering citizens, not inciting unrest.

“Why am I being targeted for engaging with my people?” he asked defiantly.
