MPs Demand Security Plan For Expressway

Written By Gerald Gekara  📝

Legislators have expressed fears over the security of key government structures such as the parliament, now located under the Nairobi Expressway.

The overpass that stretches from Waiyaki Way to Bellevue, according to the MPs, will expose the Parliament building to external dangers such as terrorism.

They now want to know if security was taken into account when the highway proposal was made, given that parliament is a high-security institution.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, has charged the National Administration and Security Committee, as well as the Transportation Committee, with obtaining answers from relevant offices and reporting back within 21 days, describing the problem as a serious matter.

The expressway, which is currently 97 percent complete, is expected to be opened on March 2022.

The infrastructure project commissioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2019 is expected to ease traffic jams associated with the road.

The contractor, China Road and Bridges Corporation, has assured of general safety of both motorists and tenants living along the road with the installation of CCTV cameras and monitoring centers.

Regular patrols and emergency services will also be on stand by in the event of any incidents.
