Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been impeached following a resounding vote by the National Assembly.
281 Members of Parliament supported the motion citing 11 serious corruption charges.
Only 44 MPs opposed the motion, while one abstained, showcasing a significant shift in political sentiment.
Speaker Moses Wetangula announced the outcome, which has sent shockwaves through the country as Kenyans grapple with the implications of this unprecedented political move.
Gachagua will continue to perform his duties pending Senate proceedings, which are expected to commence within a week.
Under the law, the Senate, led by Speaker Amason Kingi, will convene to address the charges against Gachagua.
A special committee may be appointed to investigate the allegations, and the Deputy President has the right to defend himself during the proceedings.
All eyes will be on the Senate, where the fate of the Deputy President hangs in the balance.
If the special committee substantiates the allegations, a final vote could lead to Gachagua being ousted from office, requiring a two-thirds majority in the Senate.
