MPs Move To Halt Uhuru, Kalonzo, And Raila’s Retirement Benefits

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka may soon begin repaying the Sh844 million they have received as retirement benefits, should a motion tabled in Parliament sail through.

Six MPs allied to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Coalition said the leaders do not deserve the benefits as they are currently involved in politics including taking part in the ongoing Azimio La Umoja demonstrations.

According to a document tabled by Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe, the National Assembly should compel the government to recover the funds paid as retirement benefits for the former Head of State on grounds that he violated the terms.

“The immediate former President has continued to receive benefits despite violating clause 4 (d). Now, therefore, as custodians of the law and public resources, this House resolves that the National government, through relevant ministries and agencies recovers Ksh78,764,000 paid to Uhuru Kenyatta,” the motion read in part.

The lawmaker also asked National Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof Njunguna Ndung’u to stop paying the former President’s retirement benefits.

In the motion, Kagombe also demanded that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga be compelled to refund Ksh388.8 million and his co-principal, Kalonzo Musyoka, repay Ksh375.7 million for his continued political involvement.

Kagombe’s motion also requests that CS Ndung’u provide data on payments made to the three politicians since their retirement dates to the National Assembly.

Since the act came into force, the three are entitled to three drivers paid Sh70,000 each, one personal assistant entitled to Sh200,000 monthly, one accountant Sh100,000, two secretaries Sh140,000, two housekeepers Sh80,000, two senior support staff at Sh100,000, two gardeners at Sh40,000, two cooks at Sh140,000, two cleaners at Sh50,000, armed security guards who shall be provided on request at Sh200,000, diplomatic passports, office and office equipment, maintenance equipment for the vehicles provided and access to the VIP lounge 11 at all airports within Kenya.
