Titled “Harnessing the Private Sector for Food Systems Transformation in Africa,” the report, spearheaded by AGRA President Dr. Agnes Kalibata, outlines how empowering MSMEs can generate significant strides in food security and economic growth.
Dr. Kalibata noted the transformative potential of MSMEs in boosting agricultural productivity, stating, “By harnessing the power of the private sector, we can drive meaningful food systems transformation.”
This report advocates for greater collaboration between governments and the private sector to unlock innovative solutions to pressing agricultural challenges.
As the findings suggest, there has been a notable shift toward inclusive agribusiness practices. Large-scale agribusinesses are increasingly investing in smallholder farmers, recognizing their vital role in enhancing food security and rural livelihoods.
Initiatives focused on improved seeds and modern farming techniques are yielding impressive results, exemplified by case studies from Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia.
Malawi’s investment in groundnut production and Nigeria’s revitalization of cocoa farming showcase the substantial impact of targeted agribusiness investments.
In addition, digital platforms like AgroCenta in Ghana and M-Pesa in East Africa are revolutionizing access to market information and inputs.
To capitalize on these emerging opportunities, the report urges stakeholders—including governments, private sector players, and development partners—to intensify their collaboration.
By prioritizing infrastructure investments and supporting MSMEs, Africa can enhance the resilience and sustainability of its agrifood systems.
