Mtetezi Movement Condemns Assault on Activist Awino, Demands Immediate Action Over Fuel Scandal

The Mtetezi movement has strongly condemned the alleged assault of activist Francis Awino, who is currently hospitalised following an attack in Nairobi.

In a statement, the movement described Awino, identified as a former Bunge La Mwananchi president and Mtetezi convenor, as having been attacked by individuals it linked to Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi.

According to the group, the incident occurred after a press briefing at Milimani Courts and followed an earlier confrontation involving members of the media at Chester House.

Mtetezi termed the attack a violation of constitutional freedoms, including the rights to expression, assembly and holding leaders accountable.

“This attack is not only cowardly but a direct assault on constitutional freedoms,” the statement said.

The movement also raised concerns over the ongoing controversy surrounding the importation of fuel, describing it as a serious issue affecting public safety, economic stability and consumer protection.

Mtetezi called for the immediate removal of the Energy CS, warning that failure to act would lead to public demonstrations.

“Failure to act will compel us to call on Kenyans to take to the streets and demand accountability,” the statement added.

Authorities have not yet issued an official response to the allegations as the matter continues to unfold.
