Mudavadi in Washington for High-Level Talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, is in Washington, D.C., for a series of high-level bilateral talks aimed at reinforcing the longstanding Kenya–US relationship.

The visit, which follows an official invitation from the US government, represents the first major diplomatic engagement between the two nations since President Donald Trump’s re-election. On Wednesday, Mudavadi is set to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss key areas of mutual interest including security, trade, and investment.

According to Jacob Ng’etich, Director of Press Service in Mudavadi’s office, the talks will prioritize the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and attracting more US investments into Kenya.

“This engagement follows the historic State Visit by President William Ruto in May 2024, which was the first such visit by an African leader to the US since 2008,” noted Ng’etich.

On arrival, Mudavadi held discussions with Brian Mast, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, at Capitol Hill. He lauded the US for its continued support in advancing peace and regional security, particularly in the Great Lakes Region.

“Kenya and the United States have long collaborated in promoting peace in the region, and this partnership remains crucial for lasting stability,” Mudavadi said, urging American lawmakers to also back stronger economic ties through investment in Kenya.

The visit underscores Kenya’s growing diplomatic outreach and commitment to enhancing its global partnerships.
