Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has announced a nationwide crackdown on unlicensed and unroadworthy matatus following an 11% rise in serious road injuries since 2023.

Speaking at Harambee House on Thursday, Mudavadi directed increased day and night police patrols on major highways to ensure compliance with traffic laws, prevent reckless driving, and halt operations of unsafe public service vehicles (PSVs).

“I urge Kenyans, especially PSV drivers, to exercise caution during this festive season to safeguard lives,” he stated.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road casualties rose to 21,620 by November 2024, up from 20,191 in 2023.

Fatalities climbed to 4,282 this year compared to 3,901 last year, with pedestrians and motorcyclists being the most vulnerable groups.

Mudavadi’s directive includes strict enforcement of vehicle roadworthiness regulations and speed limits.

Only PSVs with valid licenses will be allowed to operate, while illegal vehicles will be removed from service.

The Interior CS emphasized personal accountability for law enforcement officers, urging them to monitor and address safety violations to achieve a 50% reduction in road fatalities by 2028.

This decisive move aims to enhance road safety as traffic volumes peak during the holiday season.
