Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, H.E. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, arrived in Harare on Sunday to co-chair a critical joint ministerial meeting of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The meeting, held alongside Zimbabwe’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and SADC Council of Ministers Chairperson, Prof. Amon Murwira, focuses on the escalating security crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Dr. Mudavadi was received by Kenya’s chargé d’affaires in Harare, Justine Ikumiru, and is accompanied by Cabinet Secretary for Defence, Soipan Tuya, among other senior Kenyan officials.
The discussions follow the Dar es Salaam resolutions from the joint EAC-SADC Heads of State Summit on February 8, 2025, aiming to address the root causes of conflict in eastern DRC and foster a transformative political climate.
The ministerial meeting builds on prior engagements, including sessions involving EAC and SADC Chiefs of Defence Forces, as directed by the Heads of State.
It seeks to craft a comprehensive peace plan to stabilize the region, where violence involving rebel groups like M23 has displaced thousands and strained regional relations. The agenda emphasizes dialogue, humanitarian access, and sustainable solutions to end the cycles of conflict.
Dr. Mudavadi underscored Kenya’s commitment to regional peace, noting the importance of unified EAC-SADC efforts. The meeting is expected to produce actionable strategies to advance the Dar es Salaam framework, with outcomes likely to shape future diplomatic and security interventions in the DRC.
