Mukumu Girls Closed Indefinitely After Disease Outbreak Kills 2 Students

Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School in Kakamega County was closed indefinitely on Monday after two students died of suspected food and water poisoning.

According to reports, one student is recovering in the intensive care unit.

Western Regional Director of Education Jared Obiero on Monday confirmed the incident to the media.

According to Obiero, the school, the Ministry of Education, and the county government, all met to discuss the decision to suspend school learning.

So far, two students have died while the majority have been discharged from hospital, with only 25 still admitted at the Kakemega County General Hospital and St Elizabeth Mukumu Mission Hospital.

The school has been in the news recently after a large number of students were hospitalised with vomiting, diarrhoea, and dizziness.

In late March, 72 students from the Kakamega County school were admitted to the Kakamega County General Hospital due to a Cholera outbreak, according to health officials.

Last Friday, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale visited the school and asked the Ministry of Health to close it to avoid a health crisis.

Senator Khalwale described the situation at the school as dire, urging immediate action to address the underlying cause of the sickness.
