A senior teacher who also served as the boarding mistress at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ High School in Kakamega County died in an Eldoret hospital.
Ms Juliana Mujema died at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at LifeCare Specialty Hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition on Wednesday after being referred by Oasis Hospital in Kakamega County.
She was in ICU due to liver and kidney damage caused by toxins in her water and food, according to doctors.
According to her family, Mujema suffered similar symptoms reported by the three students who have also died.
“It started with damaged liver and kidney; then the two organs failed and later multiple organ failure,” NTV reported.
She is survived by a husband and two children.
This comes barely weeks after the school was closed and students sent home following an outbreak of a disease in the school.
Preliminary findings from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) pointed to contaminated water and food as the cause of the outbreak.
