Mukumu Girls Re-Opens A Month After Death Of Three Students, Staff Member

Form four students at Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County are currently undergoing health and basic needs checks.

They are the first students to return to school after the school was closed on April 3rd due to the deaths of three students and a staff member.

The government attributed the disease outbreak at the school to water contamination, which caused typhoid fever and amebiasis.

Later, the government incinerated the school’s cereals, which parents objected to as they were unfit for human consumption.

The committee formed to oversee the implementation of recommendations for improved sanitation to ensure the safety of children, chaired by Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia, stated that upon resumption of learning, students would receive both group and individual counselling, as well as monitoring of their health status.
