Mulot MPESA Fraud Gang ‘Leader’ Held For Two More Days

Mutai was arrested on suspicion of being the leader of a cartel that uses a victim's cell phone number to obtain access to sensitive personal data and bank accounts using mobile banking apps.

Hilary Langat Matindwet alias David Mutai, a Mulot SIM swap fraud suspect, will be held in detention for two additional days pursuant to the prosecution’s successful application on Tuesday to detain him pending charging.

He will be detained at the Muthaiga Police Station until January 5, according to the court order.

Mutai was arrested on suspicion of being the leader of a cartel that uses a victim’s cell phone number to obtain access to sensitive personal data and bank accounts using mobile banking apps.

He will appear in the Kiambu Law Courts on Thursday, January 5, to have his bail application evaluated.

The police had urged the court to keep the suspect in custody for another seven days so that they could complete their investigation.

Mutai’s counsel, on the other hand, opposed to the application, claiming that denying him bond or release was a violation of his fundamental rights.

Kiambu Chief Magistrate Meresia Opondo ordered the suspect to appear in court on Thursday at 10 a.m.
