Multimedia University Students Protest Over Delay In HELB Disbursement

Traffic on Magadi Road in Kajiado County was disrupted on Tuesday morning as Multimedia University learners demonstrated against the college’s administration and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Students blocked the road outside their school gate, accusing the varsity of closing the student portal before they had finished registering for this semester’s classes.

They lit tires and bonfires while chanting phrases like ‘the struggle continues’ alluding to their relentless push for action.

They also complained about missing marks for the 2023 graduating class and a delay in the disbursement of HELB funds for continuing students.

The students engaged security officers in running battles, prompting them to use teargas to disperse the crowds.

Videos on the X platform showed students taking to the streets, burning tyres and running, with some jumping over the fence amid the commotion.

The university’s tenth graduation ceremony is scheduled for Friday, October 27.
