Transport along Magadi Road in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, was severely disrupted on Tuesday morning as students from Multimedia University held demonstrations, demanding the restoration of water services in their hostels.
The students accused the university administration of neglect, highlighting that they had gone days without access to clean water, which they described as a major inconvenience.
In addition to the water crisis, students expressed their frustrations over unstable internet connectivity, which they claimed hampered their learning activities. Despite issuing a strike notice last Tuesday and attempting to engage with the administration, their efforts yielded no results.
The protests escalated as students barricaded the highway, prompting motorists to seek alternative routes. A student leader declared that demonstrations would persist until the administration addressed their concerns.
This incident adds to a wave of protests in Kenyan universities, as students express opposition to a new university funding model.
Recent demonstrations at Moi University echoed similar sentiments when students sought government intervention after feeling their grievances were ignored. Students across the nation have labeled the funding model discriminatory and are calling for its complete overhaul.
