Several people have been killed and many others injured after a car drove into a crowd at a street festival in Vancouver, police say.
The incident occurred shortly after 20:00 local time (04:00 BST) at the Lapu Lapu Day celebration near E. 41st Avenue and Fraser Street.
Vancouver Police confirmed that the driver is in custody and an investigation is underway.
In a statement posted on X, police said: “A number of people have been killed and multiple others are injured after a driver drove into a crowd at a street festival. We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds.”
Mayor Ken Sim said he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the “horrific” event, describing it as a tragedy on a day meant for celebration. Lapu Lapu Day is recognised as one of the most significant cultural events for the Filipino community in Vancouver.
British Columbia Premier David Eby also expressed his condolences, saying he was “shocked and heartbroken” by the news. “My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones,” he said, adding that provincial authorities were offering support to the ongoing investigation.
The motive behind the incident remains unclear. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area and allow emergency services to work.
Witnesses reported chaotic scenes as festival-goers fled the area. Emergency crews quickly responded, treating the injured on site before transporting several people to nearby hospitals.
More details are expected as police continue their inquiries.
