Multiple Injured in Kentucky Shooting After Suspect Flees into a Church

Multiple people were injured Sunday in a shooting at Richmond Road Baptist Church in southwest Lexington, after a gunman who had earlier shot a Kentucky state trooper fled to the church and opened fire.

According to Kentucky State Police, the incident began at 11:36 a.m. in Fayette County when a trooper was shot during an encounter with the suspect.

The suspect then fled the scene and later entered the church, where a service was believed to be underway.

Inside the church, the gunman opened fire, injuring several individuals. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed in a post on social media that “multiple people” were wounded in the incident.

The suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement, state police confirmed, but few additional details have been released.

“The trooper and others injured in today’s shooting are receiving treatment,” Beshear stated, calling the attack “tragic and senseless.” He urged the public to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts.

Local and state authorities remain at the scene, and the area surrounding the church has been cordoned off.

Emergency responders transported the injured to nearby hospitals, though the number and severity of injuries have not been officially confirmed.

Law enforcement is expected to hold a press briefing as more information becomes available. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
