Mung’aro Puts Incoming CECs On Notice: Deliver Or Else

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro has given his County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) tough conditions that will see them deliver on the promises he made to the people during the campaign.

Speaking after witnessing their swearing the Governor said among many other interventions his team must be up to the task and deliver in every sector prudent to the people.

The Governor specifically tasked the finance, agriculture and water department to immediately come up with new measures that will address key areas of the economy that is currently on their knees.

“The task ahead of you is not easy and you must deliver to the people. We promised them development and you are the team that I lead and which must deliver,” he said.

The finance department he said has the task of ensuring that revenue collection meets the intended target after years of mismanagement and corruption that resulted in poor revenue collection.

“The loopholes that are there in revenue streams must be sealed. I expect the finance department to fast track the digitisation of all revenue collection to end the wanton stealing of public money through corruption,” he said.

He told both the water and agriculture departments to make sure they come up with long-term solutions to water scarcity and food security.

“The current drought situation has made life unbearable for many Kilifians. That is why of late had been distributing relief food to victims of hunger. But as you take office, you will have to implement our programs that will resonate with our manifesto, focusing on long-term solutions,” he said.

He said that with agriculture being the main economic activity in the region, more focus should be prioritized on the areas of speed intervention to enable the production of enough food for consumption and for commercial purposes.

“You must work like what I do. If one used to report to work at 8 am then that should change because I report to the office at 7 am and I expect you to follow suit,” he said.

County assembly speaker Teddy Mwambire who was also at the event told the CECs to up their game in their different departments with a clear picture in mind that they are working for the people of Kilifi in the realisation of the Governor s plans.

“Let’s face it right here. There is a problem with the revenue collection in this county and corruption is the cause. These cess centres that were set up to increase revenue collection have not met their target since devolution. When I was serving in the then Kilifi County Council, we were collecting millions of money through local revenue generation centres. But since devolution, the revenue collection has been dwindling by the day because of corruption. Hardly can these cess collection centres generate a million a month. The past regime failed to address this problem and was a bitter pill for the people of Kilifi. Kindly this should end. As the Governor promised in his campaign you need to know that this is a chance to serve,” Mr Mwambire said.

The ten CECMs were sworn in after they were vetted by the County Assembly.
