Murang’a Bank Robbery Suspect Was Shot Nine Times, Autopsy Reveals

An autopsy on one of the suspects allegedly killed by Murang’a County police officers revealed that he was shot at least nine times.

Pathologist Kamotho Watenga from Murang’a District Hospital who conducted the postmortem said Joseph Kamau, 30, died from a gunshot wound to the head.

He was shot in the head three times and six times in the chest and abdomen.

The pathologist said the three bullets on the head had entry and exit points but the other six bullets had no exit points.

“We could not find the six bullets and the body will have to undergo an X-ray to show exactly where the fragments are located so they can be retrieved so that all parties are satisfied,” he said.

The X-ray will be conducted at Murang’a Level five hospital on Thursday night and a radiologist report issued on Friday.

Watenga said the body will only be released to the family after a full pathology report is done as required by the law.

His family members and officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) were present for the postmortem.

Speaking in the Murang’a mortuary while Joseph Kamau’s body was being autopsied, Kamau’s father, Francis kang’ethe, told the media that the family was shocked to learn that his son had been killed.

Kang’ethe claimed he learned of his death through social media and called for prompt investigations into the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.

The other suspect killed alongside Joseph Kamau is yet to be identified.

IPOA has already commenced investigations into the alleged killing of the men on Sunday after a fierce shootout took place with police officers in Murang’a.

IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori said the initial investigations revealed that police officers were involved in the killing.

“The Authority launched investigations immediately and has since established police action was an ingredient that resulted to the loss of lives.”
