The Kenyan government has pledged swift action to restore law and order along the Kenya-Ethiopia border following a deadly attack that left at least 20 fishermen dead in Turkana County.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen assured Kenyans that security forces, in collaboration with Ethiopian authorities, are working to stabilize the situation.
Speaking in Tiaty, Baringo County, on Sunday, Murkomen emphasized ongoing high-level discussions aimed at finding lasting solutions to the border tensions.
“Meetings are ongoing, and we are working together with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to resolve the issue,” he stated.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja also confirmed that the Turkana County security team is coordinating with Ethiopian officials to assess the situation and take necessary measures. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid escalating the conflict.
The violence erupted on Saturday evening when gunmen, suspected to be from Ethiopia’s Dassanach community, attacked Kenyan fishermen at Lopemukat Common Waters in a suspected retaliatory assault.
Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati confirmed additional security deployments to the area.
