Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating the rising menace of hired political goons, warning that those involved in orchestrating violence will face firm and impartial action.
Speaking on Monday during the graduation of chiefs and assistant chiefs at the National Police College, Embakasi A Campus, Murkomen said the government would act “without fear, favour or discrimination” to dismantle groups responsible for recent politically instigated chaos in Nairobi and other parts of the country.
“There is a phenomenon that has grown in the country, perpetuated by political leaders who mobilise goons carrying rungus and machetes to cheer for them. What happened in Nairobi cannot be condoned. Those responsible shall be dealt with and face the law,” he said.
Murkomen noted that chiefs across the country increasingly struggle to maintain order during public functions, including funerals, due to the presence of hired groups. He confirmed that he had agreed with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to make the crackdown on goons a top priority in the coming months.
Highlighting the role of local administrators, Murkomen described chiefs as “multipurpose officers” who assist in community conflict resolution, health promotion, farmer registration and public safety. Many of those graduating, he said, had served for nearly three decades without formal security training.
The training programme, which has equipped 5,892 chiefs and assistant chiefs since August, covered paralegal skills, governance, human rights, conflict resolution, negotiations, community engagement and security management.
It also addressed national threats such as gender-based violence, drug and alcohol abuse among youth, banditry and terrorism.
President William Ruto presided over the ceremony, praising the graduates as key pillars of peace and law enforcement in communities nationwide.
