Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is scheduled to leave the country on Sunday evening for the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, taking place from October 21 to 26, 2024.
The high-profile summit will gather leaders from 56 member countries to address pressing global challenges and foster international cooperation.
During the meeting, Mudavadi will emphasize Kenya’s commitment to the Commonwealth Declaration on Gender Equality (2021–2030) and showcase the country’s advancements in combating gender-based violence. He will provide insights into how Kenya is actively working to close the gender pay gap while empowering women through various initiatives.
In line with promoting inclusivity, Mudavadi will also discuss the recently developed national disability policy aimed at enhancing the participation of persons with disabilities in all societal activities.
Education and youth empowerment will be key themes in Mudavadi’s address. He will highlight the Kenyan government’s prioritization of education as a critical driver for economic growth, peace, and innovation. Mudavadi advocates for increased investment in education, particularly in modern technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). He will present examples of how Kenya is harnessing AI in healthcare to develop diagnostic tools for conditions such as malaria and tuberculosis.
In addition to education, Mudavadi will position Kenya as a leader in renewable energy, noting that approximately 90% of the nation’s electricity is generated from green sources. He will outline the government’s environmental strategy, including the ambitious goal of planting 10 billion trees by 2032, as part of Kenya’s contributions to the Paris Agreement and the Vision 2030 initiative.
Furthermore, Mudavadi plans to appeal to Commonwealth IDA donor countries for support to enhance contributions to USD 120 million during the 21st IDA Replenishment Cycle in 2024. He will also lobby for support from African leaders for Raila Odinga’s candidacy for Chair of the African Union Commission.
As the summit approaches, all eyes will be on Mudavadi as he represents Kenya on this international stage, advocating for gender equality, youth empowerment, and sustainable development.
