Museveni Asks Uganda Goalkeeper Why He ‘Allowed’ South Africa Goal

President Yoweri Museveni left the room in laughter when he quizzed the Uganda Cranes goalkeeper on why he had allowed South Africa to score in an empty net.

Using the lighthearted moment to make a point, Museveni said that just like in football, proper strategy and discipline are key to success.

The President was speaking during a State dinner at Entebbe to celebrate the team’s performance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 and their progress in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Museveni fulfilled his UGSh2.4 billion pledge to the Cranes, confirming that the money had already been wired into their accounts. He had promised UGSh1.2 billion per win during CHAN, translating to Sh30 million for each member of the 40-man contingent.

“I promised and I am implementing, so today I am fulfilling my pledge. I congratulate our footballers for the great improvement you have shown; you have made Uganda proud,” he said.

Despite exiting CHAN 2024, the Cranes have shown remarkable progress, winning three of their last World Cup qualifiers. They sit second in their group behind Algeria, keeping their qualification hopes alive.
