President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic road accident that occurred early Wednesday morning along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, which has so far claimed 46 lives, according to updated police figures.
In a message released this afternoon, the President extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the crash.
“I have learnt with sadness about the tragic accident that occurred this morning along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, claiming several lives. I extend my condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a quick recovery,” President Museveni said.
The President announced that he has directed the State House Comptroller to provide Shs 5 million (Sh185,730 – in current exchange rate) to each bereaved family and Shs 1 million (Sh37,146) to each injured person to assist with immediate needs.
“I urge all road users to exercise utmost caution to prevent such tragedies. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” he added.
The accident, which occurred at Kitaleba Village in Kiryandongo District, involved four vehicles and was reportedly caused by reckless overtaking.
Police have since revised the death toll to 46 after confirming that some of the initially counted victims had regained consciousness.
