Muslims in Kilifi County wants the incoming county government to consider their learners in Madrasas for bursaries like the rest of beneficiaries who are non-muslims.
Speaking at Juwaba Hall when they represented a raft of demands to Kilifi’s ODM gubernatorial candidate Gideon Mung’aro, the leaders said that the current regime literary locked them out of the bursary scheme and hence they need that now captured.
They also demanded that both the national and county governments consider for employment teachers teaching in Madrassa.
“In the education act 2013, Madarasa has been recognised although there are still Policies to be worked on. However and because of that , we would like the county government that will come in to consider our Madarasa students for bursaries when they apply,” said one of the elders.
The leaders also asked Mr Mung’aro to make sure that at least a number of Muslims are adopted in various boards and departments in his administration.
” I can assure you that some of the Muslim leaders you see here are educated, they have a work experience that can aid in enhancing your county development agenda. Please consider them in your different boards including the Governor’s advisory board you intend to form,” the leaders said.
Mr Mung’aro assured them that they will be considered for different sectors in his administration.
He said that despite the perception that the Muslim community has been given a raw deal by previous leaders, he gave his history of working with them since he was a Malindi Mayor, then serving as Malindi MP and later Kilifi North MP.
“If there is a community I have closely worked with then it is the Muslims. Since I was the mayor of Malindi, then later becoming an MP in Kilifi North. In all these position I appointed Muslims to work in various sectors because I believe in their ideologies and efforts towards transforming the lives of the community,” he said.
He promised to absorb them in different areas of work when he becomes the next governor after the exit of Governor Amason Kingi.
