Mutuma and Kendi shine in base Yetu Pool Tournament

Simon Mutuma and Faith Kendi are the champions of the ‘Shujaa wa Pool’ tournament.

They  emerged the best out of over 500 competitors across Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties.

They won the ultimate prize of Ksh.500,000 from a local youth empowerment organisation Base Yetu, whose aim is to help establish small and medium businesses.

Nairobi based Mutuma came from 2-0 down to beat Leonard Murithi 8-3 in the final, taking home the much coveted prize.

Faith Kendi who is a part time student at the Meru Polytechnic and hairdresser at Makutano in Meru County, defeated Judith Gacheri in the final, to become the first ever county 12 and 13 ladies’ pool champion.

With the initiative seeking to help the youth establish their own businesses, using pool also came with a challenge to demystify pool as a proper sport rather than a gambling game.

In two months’ time, the initiative is set for Nyeri County. Base Yetu founder and CEO, Nick Mararo, promised bigger and better events around the country in readiness for the national championship, which is set for Nairobi later in the year.

As a bonus, the two winners were airlifted in a helicopter, having secured tickets to represent the two counties at the national championship.

They were also presented with medical covers, further underscoring the momentousness of the organisers of the event in assuring players welfare.
