President William Ruto has officially opened the construction of the Mwache dam in Kwale County.
The President was joined by Alice Wahome, the CS for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, to officially open the dam, which would provide 186,000 cubic meters of water per day to the counties of Kwale and Mombasa.
Mwache Dam, an 87.5-meter-tall concrete gravity dyke, will increase the county’s water supply for Kwale, Kilifi, and Mombasa by impounding 118 million cubic meters for irrigation and water supply.
By August 2026, the Multi-Purpose Dam on the Mwache River is expected to be finished, and it will play a crucial role in Kenya’s National water infrastructure.
According to the Ministry, the Kenya Kwanza Government will reduce the water demand in the Coast region by 54.7% through cooperation with the World Bank-funded dam.
The Dam is in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Government of Kenya Kwanza Manifesto, both of which emphasize the importance of food security, water security, and sanitation for the advancement of our nation.
According to the Kenya Kwanza Government, the dam is evidence of its dedication to ensuring a better future for citizens and making sure that every Kenyan has access to safe, dependable water and food security.
