The death of Kyale Mwendwa has marked the end of the Mwendwa political dynasty in Ukambani.
Kyale, the last of the famous Mwendwa brothers passed on Tuesday, heralding the end of a famous generation.
His kin, Ngala Mwendwa, Kyale Mwendwa and Kitili Mwendwa served in Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s Government and Daniel Moi stable.
Mzee Kenyatta relied heavily on the influence of the Mwendwa family to stabilise Kitui politics.
He appointed the three to top positions in Government and allocated prime pieces of land to them.
But their respective sons have disappointed politically, failing to inspire their generations to take up the mantle.
Non of them has ever been elected to Parliament, Senate or Governors.
The family was politically silenced by the late Francis Mwanzia Nyenze partly due to political squabbles, and enlightenment of the Kitui population.
Kyale Mwendwa served as director of Education in the in the government of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
Mwendwa was the first African director of education , owing primarily to the close relationship between the Mwendwa family and Kenyatta family.
His brother, Ngala went on to become a minister in the same government.
Kitili Maluki Mwendwa was also the first African Chief Justice but was forced out after crossing hairs with Mzee Kenyatta.
He attempted to overthrow the Government of Mzee Kenyatta, together with Major General Ndolo and the infamous Yatta MP John Mutiso.
Kyale Mwendwa served as President Moi’s Minister between 1985 and 1992.
When Multi Party politics became a reality in Kenya, Mwendwa joined Mwai Kibaki’s Democratic Party of Kenya.
He contested the Kitui West Parliamentary seat but lost to Nyiva Kitili Mwendwa, the widow of his late brother Kitili.
