Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed his life is at risk after the government withdrew his security detail, escalating an already tense political fallout between him and President William Ruto’s administration.
Speaking during an interview with K24 TV on Monday, January 12, 2026, Gachagua said he was no longer under state protection despite his long service in government and his continued influence in national politics.
He described the move as reckless and dangerous, arguing that his seniority and political standing warrant continued security arrangements.
“I want to tell the people of Kenya that Rigathi Gachagua is not safe. The government withdrew security from him. Despite the fact that he was removed from office, millions of Kenyans are behind him; hence, he is a senior leader who deserves protection because of his seniority in public service and his key role in determining the next presidential election,” Gachagua said.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader framed the withdrawal as part of a broader political campaign against him, accusing President Ruto of turning hostile following their dramatic fallout and his growing influence in the Mt Kenya region.
“William Ruto has declared war on Rigathi Gachagua because he has lost the mountain, and he is very bitter,” he said.
Gachagua’s remarks come a day after he accused President Ruto of using state security to intimidate him and his supporters after teargas was deployed during a church service in Kiambu County.
Gachagua made the claims on Sunday, January 11, 2026, while speaking at AIPCA Kiamuoria Church in Gatundu North, Kiambu County. His remarks came after chaos was reported near the church, where worshippers said teargas affected women, children, and other congregants.
Addressing the congregation in Kikuyu and Swahili, Gachagua told those affected not to worry and apologised to women and children who were caught up in the incident. He said the use of teargas in churches had become a habit and directly blamed President Ruto.
“Msijali, poleni sana watoto na kina mama wale wameguzwa na teargas. Hii imekuwa ni tabia ya William Ruto kupiga watu kanisani,” Gachagua said.
