The body of Evans Chirchir, a National Treasury employee who had been reported missing by his family for several days, was found at the Machakos Level Five Mortuary.
According to his lawyer, Chirchir had previously expressed concerns for his safety related to a KSh 286 million tender.
However, the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and police have not yet determined if there are any individuals responsible.
Authorities stated that the case is still under investigation and is currently considered mysterious.
Dr. Daniel Katua, the medical superintendent at Machakos Level Five Hospital, confirmed that Chirchir’s body was brought to the facility on August 31, 2024, at 9:20 p.m.
Officers from Kyumbi Police Station positively identified the body with the help of mortuary attendants’ records.
Katua mentioned that the cause of death has not yet been established.
“The family has obtained permission from Kyumbi Police Station to transfer the body to a private mortuary of their choice,” he told reporters in Machakos on Wednesday.
Dr. Katua declined to provide further details, citing privacy reasons, and directed reporters to contact the family for additional information.
He also noted that the deceased’s relatives initially attempted to retrieve the body but were informed that they needed permission from Kyumbi Police Station before proceeding.
“A post-mortem examination was scheduled to be conducted today, Wednesday, at this facility. However, the family requested to transfer the body instead. When they arrived, we informed them to first obtain clearance from the police,” Dr. Katua explained.
After securing the necessary documentation, the family successfully collected and transferred the body to Machakos Funeral Home.
They, however, declined to speak with the media.
This comes amid probe the deceased may have been killed over his work. But police said they are investigating the claims.
Police said they are working with the family in effort to solve the saga.
